Because I love the Creation — wide open skies, water and creatures, the play of light — and have a kinesthetic need to explore their intricacy and beauty, I have drawn and painted since early childhood. Exploring the essence of what I see and experience is fundamentally important to me. It also provides a way to share and celebrate with others what moves me deeply.
Description
Peonies are the height of our spring gardening season and were a compelling reason to leave Berkeley, where it’s too warm for them to grow. I love gathering them by the armful and bringing them into my home, along with mock orange, to arrange and share with friends. But the rare and incomparable tree peonies — sometimes twice the size of the others — I find hard to part with. I’ve painted them for years, reveling in their beauty, their subtle and dramatic variations in color, and the way they play with light. This painting is a favorite.
