Matalija Poppy
Oil, 16” × 20” (18” × 22” framed)
A dramatic California blossom painted in Greensboro, inspired by the towering wild Matalija poppy.
Because I love the Creation — wide open skies, water and creatures, the play of light — and have a kinesthetic need to explore their intricacy and beauty, I have drawn and painted since early childhood. Exploring the essence of what I see and experience is fundamentally important to me. It also provides a way to share and celebrate with others what moves me deeply.
Matalija poppies grow on ten‑foot bushes in the wilds of Northern California. Their blossoms are huge, dramatic, and unforgettable — flowers I’ve loved dearly for years. I painted this one night in a painting group in Greensboro, and it has remained a favorite. The bold scale of the bloom and its luminous white petals make it a joy to capture in oil.
