Columns Alight in Irving Park
Pastel, 11.5” × 15”
A radiant morning sketch capturing sunlit columns and a bright bird feeder.
Because I love the Creation — wide open skies, water and creatures, the play of light — and have a kinesthetic need to explore their intricacy and beauty, I have drawn and painted since early childhood. Exploring the essence of what I see and experience is fundamentally important to me. It also provides a way to share and celebrate with others what moves me deeply.
I like to keep a sketchbook and art materials in the car so I can stop and paint whenever something calls to me. That’s exactly what happened on the morning I sketched this house with its columns and bird feeder. They were dazzling in the sunlight, and I had to paint them — had to try to capture the radiance of that particular moment.
