Olds Carter
My inspiration comes from my fond childhood memories growing up in Eastern North Carolina, the beautiful bright and bold colors of the Gullah art from Charleston, South Carolina, the sounds of hearing my older brother listening to jazz artist like Jimmy Smith, John Coltrane, or Nancy Wilson, etc., and dreaming of becoming a professional dancer one day. I express my feelings of dance, music, and childhood experiences through my artwork. Letting myself escape through music, I close my eyes and can feel the dancer’s movements through the strokes of my paintbrushes.
I envision the movement of lines, whimsical patterns, and bright, beautiful, and bold colors, that are portrayed within my paintings of joyful dancers that move with rhythm, a jazz scene of singers and musicians, or Black Folk Art portrayed in everyday life scenes. When the viewer looks at my work, I want them to have a feel-good experience.
