Jessamyn Bailey

My work explores the relationship between memory, place, and people through which we make personal meaning. I am interested in how our history becomes layered into our identity, shaping the way we understand ourselves, others, and the spaces we move through. Rather than offering a fixed narrative, I want my work to create space for reflection, allowing viewers to bring their own memories and experiences into the artwork. From intimate to universal.
Material choice is central to my practice. I work with a wide range of two-dimensional materials, allowing color, light, layered materials, mark-making, and surface to become part of the emotional language of the work. Through drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media and traditional & alternative photography processes, I create works depicting universal experiences such as love, loss, growth, and change.
My process aims to investigative and describe human experiences, often begining with my own experience, then allow the work to shift as materials, images, and associations develop.

Description

Black and white gelatin silver print from 35mm negatives as a full frame print. The images were shot with a Canon AE-1 camera body without a lens. The body was fitted with a pinhole adapter which gives the image it’s mysterious quality. The photos were shot in Cornwall, England in a forest setting featuring a corset wrapped around the tree. This image is part of my Cornwall corset series. Print is mounted on aluminum backing without a frame.
