Terry Chavis
For Dr. Chavis, ceramics is more than making something beautiful or useful. It is a way to remember, share, and keep Indigenous knowledge and practices moving forward. His work uses pottery as a starting point for conversations about Indigenous cultures, Ways of Knowing, and the connections between people, place, and community. Dr. Chavis is an enrolled member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, the 575th federally recognized tribe in the United States. He grew up on his tribal homelands in Pembroke, North Carolina, and has called Greensboro home since 2020. His connection to his community and experiences as an Indigenous millennial shape how he approaches both his artwork and his teaching. Through Indigenous Millennial LLC, Dr. Chavis combines his love of ceramics with his passion for education. As an Entrepreneur-In-Residence at The Forge Greensboro, he creates opportunities for people of all.
