Sculptural Plaster Relief
Carol
Kaminski
I probably would have enjoyed being an architect; I love building and art, which are combined in my current work. I create bas relief art, a form of sculpture where the design is raised from the background. Unlike traditional low relief, I prefer high relief. I use joint compound, often called plaster, and epoxy clay on wood panels or backer board.
I start by applying a few skim coats of plaster, sometimes adding texture or color. The image is then drawn on the surface. Using various painting knives, wet brushes, and carving tools, I build up the depth of the plaster, layer by layer, over hours or days. Once it’s dry, I sand it to achieve smoothness, which can take days. The finished plaster is sealed to protect it from moisture.
Some pieces remain white, relying on light and shadow, while others are colored. My goal is for viewers to complete image in their minds and imagine what’s on the other side of the panel. This playful concept drives my passion for creating 3D art.
