My style of painting is Contemporary Impressionism, adding whimsy, warmth and emotion, creating a playful mystery at times. I capture the essence of my subject rather than the exact form or detail of the figure or scene.
Much of my work is oil on canvas, but I also enjoy up cycling old fence posts and creating colorful and whimsical garden pieces using acrylic paints.
Subject matter can be an agonizing process for me but once I arrive at my decision, I very loosely draw it out on the canvas and paint in shapes favoring suggestion rather than precision.
The artists who have inspired me the most are the Impressionists along with Modigliani, Hopper and Vettriano. My love of vintage clothing draws me to the latter three.
References with a hint of a narrative are what catches my eye. Maybe it's the subjects gesture or movement or a landscape that suggests a mood suspended in time. Or a memory.
My aim is to lift the spirit and create a connection with the viewer.
