IAn interest in creating art began in early childhood for Vicki. While siblings played with dolls, she had paper, paints and pencil; creating in two dimensions. She took every art class available in junior and senior high school and won scholastic art awards, honorable mentions and a Gold Key Award. She was a winner of Junior Women's League Art Competition and a finalist in "17 Magazine Arts Contest." She majored in art and english at Western Carolina University. She has studied with national and international instructors such as Skip Lawrence, Christopher Schink, Arnie Westerman, Don Andrews, John Lines, Chuck McLachlin and Sterling Edwards.
She is a member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina, and was accepted into juried exhibitions in 2002 and 2009, winning a merchandise award. Her works have been exhibited in state and national shows and purchased in private and corporate collections. She is a member of Associated Artists of Winston Salem.
She has worked in mixed media, oils, clay, fiber, wood, metal, glass, etc. but has a preference for water media.
Vicki's work may be described as expressive and emotional, presented on her own terms. Her painting involves the behaviors of paint itself; it's spatial relationships and fluidity. It is the special exploration of color, value, balance, motion, and texture that conveys feeling in her work. She handles paint mostly wet-in-wet, enjoying the fluidity of water media, resulting in luminosity and imagination. Her work is playful and reactive.
Vicki is an abstract artist. She believes that art should engage the viewer on an emotional, almost visceral, level. What is important for the artist is to be sure, not that their painting is a literal portrayal of what they see, but that it is an accurate portrayal of what they are feeling about their subject.Contact information for Vicki Johnson:
