This new work is about an exploration of the Lily Pond. There is a man-made lake built by Moses Cone in the early 1900’s and is part of the Moses Cone Estate sitting below the Moses Cone Manor in Blowing Rock NC called Bass Lake. In the fall it is just covered by Lily Pads, all blooming. My dog and I have been out there during every season and walked around the pond taking pictures, gathering material for paintings. We even went out there during the hurricane of 2017 to take pictures of lily pads in the rain. After a 2 ½ hour drive out there, we found the gate locked. Got the pictures but won’t tell you how we did it. Ella, my dog, bless her heart, is a real trooper. There is enough material to paint lily pads for years. A painter can paint any subject. It is just a vessel. The subject could be boots, trees, flowers, chairs, lily pads or anything. The Lily Pond series has just started. It should prove to be quite the adventure! My paintings are done in oil on linen. They tend to be of a larger format and lean toward an abstract landscape.Contact information for Sally Donnell Rilee:
