CWith the exception of a brief period in under-graduate studies my artworks (paintings, drawings, sculpture) have always been representational/figurative. The work has gone through several major changes, perhaps what changes most is the degree to which I abstract the figure/image. As Picasso did, I see different approaches , cultural etc., to representation as visual language(s) and am fluent several approaches. You might say my work is a synthesis of western Renaissance techniques and symbolism tempered by studies of African aesthetics (I collect African art), works from Pre-Columbian American cultures, and various other international folk/"primitive" styles.Contact information for Michael Northuis:
